Yeah kinda has a Rocket-esque feel to it doesn't it? I'm a fan of this combo!

UL520 - lighter than an O-320 and up to 200 HP, and about the same money as an O-320, what a combination.MAKpilot wrote:Wow Dan, it's great to hear how busy SPA must be developing all of this.
A 520 on the Panther...do you foresee an expansion of the Vne in the future for the airplane? (This assumes LSA compliance is not an objective)

Re: Possibly the first UL350 installed on the Panther 350 Mo
Hi guys
Dan you will need the short 55mm flange to work with the cowl. The UL 390 and 520 6 cylinder engines will use the 90 mm flange. If you are considering a UL (350 ,390,or 520) you can contact SPA and order directly so your engine is properly configured with the correct hub, and exhaust system. You Will also get a substantial "package discount " By ordering your UL engine, mount , and cowl through SPA.
The UL cowl looks just like the Universal cowl , but longer. the UL series is very "bulky " in the cylinder area ,and the top induction tubes. this requires a cowl very similar in size to the 0-320. Also the exhaust system is too wide for our narrow cowl ( both straight pipe , and muffler systems) so we are working on a Panther Spec exhaust system to be supplied with the engine.
you will see pics on this and some other cool projects on our site soon

Re: Possibly the first UL350 installed on the Panther 350 Mo
That's what we need, a PT6 powered Panther! Haha, probably not. Maybe the 390 would be suitable 'ballast' to shorten up the nose moment however, with the Lycoming cowl? That'd be a rocket...hmmm..things to ponder as we blow through the LSA top speed.
Looking forward to seeing how your long nose version looks in the meantime!

Re: Possibly the first UL350 installed on the Panther 350 Mo
The CG issue was that the universal mount was too short, thus the CG being too far aft. I am not sure how much farther forward this is, but I suspect around 5".
I don't have any factual information on the cowling yet, but I am sure Dan will let me know when it is ready. I want to be able to pick it up at Corvair College in Barnwell in March. I won't need it before then. I am expecting to move the Panther to the airport for finishing up, around the end of March.

Perhaps a single 4" diameter pipe out the side of the long cowl so it looks like a turbine under there...just kidding.
I'm guessing this is a CG issue that could be solved by a shorter (Corvair length) mount and shifting some of the weight forward to keep the same CG envelope. Although, the long nose will probably look cool!
