Technically, these are non structural rivets, but are sufficient for our purposes. Structural rivets usually have a locking ring to hold the stem in place. Then you can count the stem as part of the strength of the rivet.

Riveted first elevator. I have been dreading proud rivet stems...actually the opposite is happening, the stems are breaking off well below the head, maybe an 1/8” below, On both CS and protruding rivets. I was under the impression that the stem added to rivet strength. These stems are breaking below the skins. Also I have 3 rivets that have split on the shop side and the stem “ball” fell out so I replaced them, is that necessary?
