24” max, but this is not a “rule of thumb”. This is spelled out in AC43.13B, Paragraph 11-96(a). This is an essential resource when tackling one’s own aircraft wiring:

What’s the max length of wire you guys have without support in the middle? Is there a general rule to follow?
