Dan,
The ideal worked great.
I did make me a set from an old set of nail dimple dies I had by JB welding them to a set of vise grip needle noses plies.

I just forced my squeezer in there. It bent the pocket out a little, but it formed back OK when I re-installed it. I did not like it, but like you, did not know how to do it any other way.

I used the dimple dies out of my c frame and just used a pair of slip joint pliers to squeeze them together it takes a little time but it worked for me

What method can I use to dimple the smaller (thinner) map pocket? Unable to get the nail dimple die in there to dimple.
I know Avery make a vise grip dimpler, may have to purchase one. Any ideals?
