Elevator Joiner Installation

Scroll Prev Top Next More

Note: We show installing the elevator joiner with the HT on the fuselage. This can also be done at an earlier step on a table using the same concepts.

1. Remove powder coating from the inside of the left joiner (P1602) tube and the outside of the right joiner (P1601) joiner tube so they have a slip fit.

Note: Elevator joiner arms may have slight bend from the welding process. The arms are flexible side to side and you can easily straighten them as needed.

2. With horizontal stabilizer installed on aircraft, (or on bench as noted above) install elevators, and position spacer between top of aft deck and elevators to hold both level.  Cleco inner elevator ribs in place.  Insert elevator joiner between elevator halves.  Joiner should be aligned with the top of the rib, and flush with the front of each elevator.

Note: You can trim the inner end of the left joiner slightly if need.

Note: if needed for proper fitment you can adjust the angle of the joiner arms as shown in photo.

3. Use a straight edge across both elevators to make sure they are aligned.

4. Use a long drill bit, transfer drill at least 2 holes from control horn into elevator inner rib.  Cleco as you go to keep aligned.  Do both sides of joiner.

5.  Remove elevator halves, and transfer drill all remaining holes in both halves.  Updrill holes to #30.

6. Remove inner ribs, deburr all holes on elevator ribs and joiner.  Install CCP-43 rivets in joiner to the rib.  Install the rib using BSP-42 or BSC-42 rivets depending on your choice.  Repeat for other rib.

7. Remove horizontal stabilizer and turn upside on a table.  Reinstall elevators, and realign elevators with spacers under elevators and make sure they are even with a straight edge.

8.  Insert MW5 rod end with a 3/16” bushing pressed in it between the 2 arms of the joiner.  Use a 3/16” drill bit and transfer drill hole from one tab through rod end and into the other tab.  Clamp the joiner arms together.

9. Temporarily reinstall horizontal stabilizers and elevators on the aircraft.  You can mount it with some temporary bolts as it will be removed again.
