Flap Up Spring (Optional)

Scroll Prev Top Next More

The flap up spring is recommended if you will be using the folding wing option.  The spring will hold the flap in the up position when the wing is folded.  This allows the flap to engage the flap control arm without requiring a second person to hold the flap.

1. If you don’t have tabs for mounting the springs in your kit, you can easily make one from some scrap .032 6061-T6.  The wing fold tube and flap spring template has a full size pattern for the tab.  Print the PDF file out full size, and cutout the pattern.  The large hole is 3/16” and the small hole is #40.

2. Form a ¼” joggle by bending on the 2 bend lines shown on the pattern.

3. Using a scrap piece of hinge pin form the rod as shown in the wing fold tube and flap spring template. Again, be sure to print the PDF full size.  Start by bending one end approximately 120 degrees with a pair of pliers.

4. Squeeze end together until both sections are parallel.

5. Bend the other end 90 degrees.

6. Drill a #30 hole through the rear spar doubler 3/8” from the center of the flap stop, in line with the other fasteners.

7. Use a piece of rod parallel with the top surface of the wing through the hole in the doubler.  Mark the position on the flap that the rod touches.

8. Drill hole through the doubler on the flap where you just marked.

9. Push rod through the hole in the rear spar and work the bend in the rod through the hole.

10. With flap in the down position, push the end of the rod into the hole of the flap.  While rotating flap up, push the rod through the hole.

11. Turn the rod so the end is in the corner of the flap.  Trim the end of the rod as necessary to fit.

12. Attach the spring to the tab and to the rod and verify that the spring has enough tension to hold the flap in the up position when the wing is level.  If there is not enough tension, you can make the rod shorter.
